The issue of competence orientation has been top of the European educational agenda for quite some time including two conditions: the development of a national competence frame to enable the comparability of qualifications and the acknowledgement of non-formally and informally acquired competences. On December 2 and 3, 2013, during a two-day symposium initiated by the German Institute for Adult Education – Leibniz Centre for Lifelong Learning (DIE), practitioners, politicians and scientists evaluate the latest developments as well as the standing of practice and politics in continuing education. The 16th. DIE Forum on Continuing Education sets the stage for an analysis of the opportunities and risks in aligning continuing education with competence orientation. The possible contribution of continuing education to developing a validation system, which also acknowledges non-formal and informally acquired knowledge, is also an issue during the symposium. In this context, successfully implemented steps as well as international approaches and models, which might serve as role models and be used for orientation, are presented.
