KANSAS is a research and development project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the AlphaDekade.

The interdisciplinary, three-year project KANSAS will be conducted together with computational linguists (University of Tübingen) and experts in didactics (Mercator Institute for Literacy and Language Education, University of Cologne) until August 2020. The project aims at developing a search engine which supports teachers in adult literacy and German as a second language in identifying suitable language learning texts on the internet or in electronic corpora.

Using KANSAS, teachers can determine both the topic and the linguistic complexity of texts in their query. Thus, the search engine supports teachers in finding language learning texts that fit to a certain topic as well as to the individual level of reading competence of their learners. Moreover, teachers can upload self-developed texts in order to analyze the language complexity. Furthermore, an additional, simplified version of KANSAS will allow advanced learners to search for texts with an appropriate level of language complexity on their own. Thereby learners will be enabled to gain access to suitable digital information resources as well as to train their reading skills.
